Immediate Response First Aid

Childcare First Aid Sippy Downs — HLTAID012 for Educators, Teachers & USC Students

If you work in childcare, early childhood education, or OSHC on the Sunshine Coast — or you’re a USC Education student preparing for placement — HLTAID012 Provide First Aid in an Education and Care Setting is the only qualification that meets your legal compliance requirement.

Standard HLTAID011 is not enough. ACECQA regulations are explicit: every education and care service must have at least one educator per shift holding HLTAID012. IRFA delivers this course at our Sippy Downs headquarters, 2 minutes from USC campus, at $90 with a same-day digital certificate.

What Is HLTAID012 and Why Does It Differ from HLTAID011?

HLTAID012 includes everything in HLTAID011 — CPR, DRSABCD, wound management, burns, fractures, anaphylaxis, asthma — but adds mandatory paediatric-specific content that general first aid does not cover:

  • Infant and child CPR — technique differences for newborns, infants under 12 months, and children
  • Infant choking response — back blows and chest thrusts for under-1s
  • Paediatric anaphylaxis management — hands-on EpiPen and EpiPen Jr administration
  • Febrile convulsions — recognition and safe management in young children
  • Asthma in children — spacer device use, age-appropriate response
  • Regulatory reporting obligations — mandatory notification under the Education and Care Services National Law
  • Child-safe environment principles — supervision, duty of care, and incident documentation

These skills are assessed practically. You cannot pass HLTAID012 online alone — a qualified assessor must observe your hands-on competency.

Who Must Hold HLTAID012 in Queensland?

Under the Education and Care Services National Law (QLD) and ACECQA’s National Quality Standard (NQS Quality Area 2, Element 2.2.1), the following roles require current HLTAID012:

  • Long day care educators and directors
  • Family day care educators and coordinators
  • Outside school hours care (OSHC) workers
  • Kindergarten and prep teachers in funded programs
  • Early childhood teachers (ECTs) in approved education and care services
  • USC Education and Early Childhood students on placement
  • Any staff member designated as the required first aider on shift

Standard HLTAID011 does not satisfy this requirement. If your centre’s compliance checklist shows HLTAID011 only, your service is not fully compliant under Regulation 136 of the Education and Care Services National Regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions — HLTAID012 Sippy Downs

Is HLTAID012 mandatory for childcare workers in Queensland?

Yes. Under Regulation 136 of the Education and Care Services National Regulations, every approved childcare service must ensure at least one educator holds a current approved first aid qualification — which is specifically HLTAID012, not HLTAID011. This applies to long day care, family day care, OSHC, and kindergarten services across Queensland.

Can I do HLTAID012 fully online?

No. HLTAID012 requires a face-to-face practical assessment. You can complete the online theory component at home beforehand, but the hands-on skills — CPR on a mannequin, EpiPen administration, infant choking response — must be observed and assessed by a qualified assessor in person. At IRFA, the online theory takes approximately 1–2 hours and the face-to-face session is 4 hours.

Does HLTAID012 replace HLTAID011?

Yes. HLTAID012 is a superset of HLTAID011. If you hold HLTAID012, you satisfy all workplace requirements that call for HLTAID011. You do not need to hold both separately.

How long is HLTAID012 valid?

The HLTAID012 certificate is valid for 3 years. However, the CPR component (HLTAID009) embedded within it must be renewed annually. IRFA offers standalone CPR renewals for $40, taking 2 hours.

Is IRFA’s HLTAID012 accepted by Sunshine Coast childcare centres and ACECQA?

Yes. IRFA is RTO 32154, audited and regulated by ASQA. Our HLTAID012 is fully ACECQA-approved and accepted by every childcare centre, early learning service, and school across Queensland and Australia. You can verify RTO 32154 at MySkills.gov.au.

I’m a USC Education student — do I need HLTAID012 for my placement?

Depends on your placement setting. If you are placed in an early childhood or education and care environment (childcare, kindergarten, prep), your placement coordinator will require HLTAID012. If your placement is in a primary or secondary school setting without an ACECQA-regulated component, HLTAID011 may suffice — check your Sonia Online Checks page to confirm. When in doubt, complete HLTAID012 — it covers both requirements.

Can international students at USC complete HLTAID012?

Yes. International students are welcome to enrol. You will need a USI (Unique Student Identifier), which can be created at usi.gov.au using your passport. Your certificate will be nationally recognised and accepted for any Australian workplace or placement requirement.

How do I prepare for HLTAID012?

Before your session:

  1. Create your USI at usi.gov.au if you don’t have one
  2. Complete the online theory module — IRFA will send you access after booking (approximately 1–2 hours)
  3. Bring valid photo ID — driver’s licence, passport, or proof of age card
  4. Wear comfortable clothing suitable for kneeling and floor-based CPR practice

All equipment is provided on the day — CPR mannequins (adult, child, and infant), EpiPen trainers, spacer devices, bandaging supplies, and scenario props.

Does IRFA offer group HLTAID012 training for childcare centres?

Yes. For centres with 6 or more staff requiring certification, IRFA delivers on-site group training at your Sippy Downs or Sunshine Coast premises. Training can be scheduled around nap times, after hours, or on pupil-free days to minimise disruption. Group discounts apply. Call 1300 766 298 for a centre-wide quote.

What is the difference between HLTAID012 and the old HLTAID004?

HLTAID004 was the previous childcare first aid qualification. It was replaced by HLTAID012 when the HLT Training Package was updated. If your current certificate shows HLTAID004, it is now superseded — you need to complete HLTAID012 at your next renewal. IRFA’s HLTAID012 course covers all updated content aligned to the current training package and ARC 2025 guidelines.

How close is IRFA to USC campus?

IRFA’s Sippy Downs headquarters is a 2-minute drive from USC campus via Sippy Downs Drive. For students without a car, bus routes 620, 621, and 622 (Bus stop ID 46789) stop within a 5-minute walk. Free on-site parking is available for 100+ vehicles.

Why Sippy Downs Childcare Workers Choose IRFA

Sippy Downs and surrounding suburbs — Mountain Creek, Bokarina, Buddina, Meridan Plains, Palmview — are among Queensland’s fastest-growing residential areas. With new childcare centres and schools opening consistently, demand for HLTAID012-certified educators is higher than ever.

IRFA trains the childcare sector across the entire Sunshine Coast, including centres in Maroochydore, Kawana, Buderim, Caloundra, and Nambour. Our paramedic instructors bring real paediatric emergency experience — not just manual content — to every session.

Sunshine Coast childcare centres trust IRFA because:

  • Every trainer is a qualified paramedic, not a generic workplace facilitator
  • Class sizes are capped at 12 — every participant gets hands-on mannequin and EpiPen trainer time
  • Certificates are issued same day and accepted by every ACECQA-regulated service in Australia
  • Pricing is transparent: $95 all-inclusive, no hidden fees
