Immediate Response First Aid

Quick answer: Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) training equips workers to recognise and respond to colleagues or community members experiencing mental health crises. It is not legally mandated in most Queensland workplaces but is increasingly expected in high-duty-of-care industries. IRFA (RTO 32154) delivers MHFA training across North Brisbane alongside standard first aid courses. View all North Brisbane sessions →

What Is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) is a training program that teaches people how to identify, understand, and respond to signs of mental health problems and crises. Just as physical first aid covers what to do before an ambulance arrives for a physical emergency, MHFA covers what to do before professional mental health help is obtained.

The MHFA program was developed in Australia — first delivered in Canberra in 2000 — and is now delivered in over 25 countries. In Australia, accredited MHFA courses are endorsed by Mental Health First Aid Australia (MHFA Australia), the peak body that maintains the program’s evidence base and curriculum.

The ALGEE Action Plan: Core of MHFA Training

The ALGEE action plan is the structured framework MHFA-trained workers apply when responding to a mental health crisis. Just as Chain of Survival and DRSABCD structure physical first aid response, ALGEE gives mental health first aiders a clear sequence to follow under pressure:

  • A — Approach the person, assess, and assist with any crisis
  • L — Listen non-judgementally
  • G — Give support and information
  • E — Encourage appropriate professional help
  • E — Encourage other supports including self-help strategies

The framework is deliberately simple enough to apply in high-stress situations where a colleague or community member may be in distress. It doesn’t turn participants into therapists — it equips them to be a calm, knowledgeable first point of contact before professional help arrives.

Who Should Do Mental Health First Aid Training?

With 45% of Australians experiencing a mental health condition in their lifetime, and mental health now the leading cause of long-term absence from work, MHFA training is relevant to almost every workplace. It is particularly valuable for:

  • Team leaders and managers — people in positions of responsibility for others’ wellbeing who may be the first point of contact for a colleague in distress
  • HR and WHS professionals — managing return-to-work, workplace adjustments, and critical incidents
  • Teachers, educators, and OSHC workers — responsible for the mental wellbeing of young people
  • NDIS support workers — who work directly with participants whose primary support needs may include mental health. See also: NDIS First Aid Training Queensland
  • Emergency service support roles — people who work alongside police, ambos, or healthcare workers in high-stress environments
  • Community-facing retail, hospitality, and service workers — on the Redcliffe Peninsula and across Moreton Bay, customer-facing businesses encounter mental health crises in public spaces more often than most employers prepare for

Mental Health First Aid and Queensland WHS Obligations

Queensland’s Work Health and Safety Act 2011 requires employers to protect workers from psychological as well as physical harm. Safe Work Australia’s Work-Related Psychological Health and Safety: A Systematic Approach to Meeting Your Duties (2022) framework explicitly requires employers to identify and manage psychosocial hazards. While there is no specific mandate to appoint trained MHFA officers, having trained staff is strong evidence of a proactive approach to the psychosocial duty of care.

For employers who already have WHS-compliant physical first aid programs in place, adding MHFA training is the logical next step in a comprehensive workplace safety framework.

FAQs

Is Mental Health First Aid a legally required qualification in Queensland?

Not mandated by statute as of 2026 — but the psychosocial duty of care under the WHS Act means proactive employers are increasingly treating it as a compliance investment rather than a nice-to-have. SafeWork QLD inspectors assessing psychological hazard management can and do consider whether employers have trained mental health first aiders.

How long does the MHFA certificate last?

3 years, the same validity period as HLTAID011 First Aid. Unlike CPR, there is no additional annual renewal component. Refresher courses are available for those whose certificate is approaching expiry.

Can MHFA replace a clinical mental health assessment?

No. MHFA trains people to be a supportive first responder — to recognise distress, listen non-judgementally, and help the person access professional support. It does not equip participants to diagnose, treat, or provide clinical mental health care. The goal is to bridge the gap until a professional can be involved.
