Overview of Our Workplace First Aid Training

This unit of competency describes the skills and knowledge required to provide first aid response, life support, casualty management, the incident and other first aiders, until the arrival of medical or other assistance. Our workplace first aid training covers adult and child conditions. This is the advised minimum requirement by Workplace Health and Safety Legislation for the workplace first aider. This course was previously known as Senior First Aid.

Topics Covered:

Explain the legal and social responsibilities of a first aider

Determine first aid facilities and training requirements

Assess an emergency situation

Minor wounds – Applying infection control procedures for:

○ Burns and electric shock
○ Eye and soft tissue injuries
○ Venomous bites and stings and allergic reactions
○ Spinal injuries and fractures

Manage a casualty:

○ With external bleeding
○ Suffering from shock
○ Suffering drowning/near drowning
○ Suffering head, chest and abdominal injuries
○ Suffering temperature extremes

Maintain the airway, breathing and circulation of an unconscious casualty

Operation of an automated external defibrillator (AED)

Determine principles for the assessment and movement of the sick and injured and first aid reporting requirements

Duration and Delivery Method

Four hours face-to-face training with pre-course reading required

Assessment Procedure

Assessment is at the end of the course to show the instructor that you have an appropriate understanding of the procedures necessary to manage a life-threatening situation. This will consist of a theory assessment and practical demonstrations.

Course Outcome

At the successful completion of this course, you will be issued with a statement of attainment valid for 3 years*.

*Please note that the CPR component of the training is only valid for 12 months and should be updated annually.

History Of Immediate Response First Aid

Immediate Response First Aid training was started by Peter McGreal who had seen a need to provide lifesaving skills to the general public as well as workplaces using training methods based and scenarios that would reinforce the theory aspects of the course.  Peter has been involved in training for over 30 years.  With his experiences ranging from working as a professional Surf Lifeguard as well as a paramedic.
